The church has long been the place where we all gathered to talk, eat and drink with friends and family.
We’re not going anywhere, though.
And so it was with great anticipation that we began thinking about how to decoratively honor this sacred space.
The result is a deck of deck chairs, tables, lanterns and more.
The idea came from a suggestion by a reader who posted a photo of a garden in the Vatican that looked something like this.
Here’s what that looked like in Rome, the city of saints and the Vatican.
It was all captured by photographer Giovanni Palermo, who worked for several years in the city.
“There was something about a garden that was so simple,” Palermos says.
“It’s not really a structure but a place of meditation and contemplation.”
It’s a place where you can think of your life as a garden, and you can look at it as a place to breathe and just enjoy the view.
Palerma says the deck chair is a “simple” design, and that it’s inspired by the way people sit in church, even when it’s raining outside.
“You can’t sit on a chair because it won’t fit,” he says.
The deck chairs have been a hit with visitors from all over the world.
“We have the greatest attendance in the world, we have the largest number of people and we have our guests come from all around the world,” says the Rev. James Coughlin, pastor of St. Michael’s Parish in St. Peter, who was a guest of the church last week.
He says he got the idea from visiting a church in Rome in 2013.
“I think it is an amazing opportunity to have people from all walks of life come to our church,” he said.
“This is where we’re talking about the human experience.”
Coughlins wife and mother-in-law, Stephanie and Andrew Smith, have been parishioners at the church for eight years.
“When we first got here, it was a pretty quiet place,” he explains.
“A lot of people have been coming from places like Sweden and Belgium, from other countries as well.” “
With the church now, we’ve had people come from a variety of different countries,” he continues.
“A lot of people have been coming from places like Sweden and Belgium, from other countries as well.”
Croughlins church has had a hard time keeping up with the growing number of visitors.
“People are coming from all across the world to visit us,” he adds.
“They are here for a purpose.
They come to us for a spiritual experience and they’re coming to us because they want to see what we have to offer.”
For many of the people who visit, the deck chairs can be a source of inspiration and a way to channel that spirit into the church.
“Some people may have a religious upbringing, so they’re more inclined to come in the church and pray,” Coughliners wife says.
But he says that’s not the case for all of them.
“My wife is an agnostic,” he tells the story.
“She said, ‘We have to go out there and get these people because the people coming from the west don’t come in here.
The people from the east come in there, and they come and they have fun.'”
The church now has three of the chairs on the church grounds.
The first was installed last week, and Coughliner says it was such a success that he plans to continue making the deckchairs available for visitors.
The second is coming this week.
“Once they’re installed, we’re going to start having them on the roof,” he promises.
“The third one is coming next week.
It’s just going to be a long process.”
